Arkhangelsk region

Arkhangelsk is one of Russia's historical cities. It was founded on March 4, 1583. Originally the fortress, erected at the location of contemporary Arkhangelsk, was called Novyi Gorod (New Town) Novyi Holmogorskyi Gorod, Novoholmogory, and starting from 1613 - Arkhangelskyj Gorod, but only after time the city received its contemporary name. In XVII century stone structures started to appear in Arkhangelsk. Impressive complex of shopping arcades, at the same time serving as a fortress and merchant structure (1668-1684) was the first of them.

By the end of XIX and in the beginning of XX century Arkhangelsk turned into on of the biggest timber processing and exporting centers of Russia.

Currently existing Arkhangelsk Region was founded in September 23, 1937 as a result of fragmentation of North Region to Arkhangelsk and Vologda Regions.

Geography, population, climate

Arkhangelsk Region is located in the north of European part of Russia. Its 3000 km long coast is washed by cold waters of White, Barents and Kara Seas. The area of the region territory is 587 thousands square kilometers. Total population size of Arkhangelsk Region is 1.3 million people; 1 million among them is urban population.

Nenets Autonomous Area (Okrug), 21 administrative districts, 12 towns, 31 urban-type communities, around 4 thousands of rural communities, as well as Novaya Zemlya and Franz Joseph Land are geographically included in the region.

Nearness of oceans and seas has an impact on the climate of the region, which is transitional between marine and continental. Winters are usually long (up to 250 days) and cold, with temperatures at the average of - 25 C and strong winds. During the summertime air warms up to the average of 15 degrees above zero.

Economic sectors of Arkhangelsk Region

It is the land of timber industry, fish industry, modern shipbuilding and Russian cosmonautics.

There are more then 24 thousands of enterprises and organizations of various patterns of ownership and management are registered on the territory of Arkhangelsk Region.

Economic development in mostly traditional sectors is based on enterprises of timber processing complex, construction industry and well-developed infrastructure of commercial ports, including Arkhangelsk Seaport, which is called the northern gates of Russia, and provides essential part of cargo transportation in this region.

The development of power supply system in the region.

On March 2, 1941 in 0 hours 48 minutes turbo generator of Severodvinsk combined heat and power plant - 1 (CHPP) was cut into mains and produced first kilowatt-hour of energy.

On March 26, 1941 turbo generator # 1 of Severodvinsk combined heat and power plant -1 (CHPP) was place in operation and maintenance phase.

At the end of September 1970 the first block of Arkhangelsk combined heat and power plant with working capacity of 60 megawatt was started-up, on September 28, the operation acceptance certificate was signed.

Arkhangelsk Central Administrative Board includes: Arkhangelsk CHPP, Severodvinsk CHPP-1, Severodvinsk CHPP-2, Arkhangelsk municipal heat supply network.
