Kostroma Region
Kostroma Region was registered in August 13, 1944. The Region includes: 24 districts, 8 towns, 8 urban-type communities, 3600 rural communities, 274 rural administrations.
Kostroma is an administrative, cultural and industrial center of the region. It was founded in 1152 by prince Yuri Dolgoruki. The town is located along the shores of Volga.
Beginning from the middle of XIII century Kostroma is the capital city of Kostroma appanage princedom. In March 1613 Ipatevsky monestry welcomed Moscow ambassade and young monarch Michael Romanov was called to throne.
Geography, population, climate
Kostroma Region stretches 260 km north-south, and 420 km east-west. The area of the territory is 60,2 thousands square km. The Region is located in subzone of south taiga (boreal coniferous forest). The distinguishing characteristic of taiga is the domination of spruce forests. Forests cover 74,3% of the region territory. There are more than 80 nationalities (96,3 % are Russians). Population - 766,4 thousands people (urban - 508.8 thousands., rural - 257.6 thousands.).
Economic sectors of the Region
The main economic sector is industry - 29,6 % of gross regional product.
Kostroma plant Motordetal, factory Fanplit, CB IPP Kostroma, PJSC Air Heater Plant, Kostroma jeweler's plant, Plant Serebryannyi Istochnik, Kostroma CHPP-1 and CHPP-2, Plant KVARTS, Plant Remstroiplast and other industrial enterprises are functioning in the city.
Agricultures ranks number 2 - 19,7 % (animal husbandry, cultivation and processing of flax). Trade and catering -10,7 %, construction -5,3 %, transportation -5,2 %.
The development of power supply system in the region
In 1897 in the first in Kostroma electric power station started operating in Kostroma industrial college. In 1912 the first municipal electric power station with capacity of 432 kilowatt was built in Kostroma in connection with tercentenary of Romanov's family and emperor Nicolai II arrival. In 1923 - the country's first Shungenskaya cooperative agricultural station with capacity of 350 kilowatt was put into service.
The first stage of Central electric power station was put into operation in 1930. It was the first peat-fired station, with run-around system of hydraulic ash disposal.
In 1934 that station was named Kostroma CHPP-1. In 1961 regional Energy Administration Kostromaenergo was organized. In 1965 Sharinskaya electric power station was built.
In 1970 the electrification of the region was completed. In 1974 CHPP-2 started operating. In 1993 PJSC Kostromaenergo was registered. It included: Kostroma CHPP-1, Kostroma CHPP-2, electrical networks: Central, Kostroma-Galichi, Neysk, Sharya, Energosbyt, Kostromaenergospetsremont.
In 2005 PJSC Kostroma Generating Company (Kostroma CHPP-1, Kostroma CHPP-2 and Sharinskaya CHPP) was registered. In 2006 PJSC Kostroma Generating Company was taken over by PJSC Territorial Generating Company #2.
