Novgorod Region
First record about Novgorod in chronicles was dated to 859. Its location on the pathway from the Varangians to the Greeks already in X century promoted development of useful arts (processing of iron, wood, leather, jewel art), trades and culture. In 1478 Novgorod was a part of Russian Centralized State. Since 1727 it was the center of the province.
In 1927 Novgorod was the county center, since 1930 - district center of the Leningrad Region, and in 1944 Novgorod became the center of Novgorod Region. During the Great Patriotic War it was severely damaged. In 1998 the ancient name Velikyi Novgorod (Novgorod The Great) was returned to the city. In 2009 Novgorod will celebrate its 1150th anniversary.
Geography, population, climate
Novgorod Region is located in the north-west part of Russia, and has a unique transformational and geographical location. The town is situated at the outflow of Volkhov River, which has its source from Ilmen Lake.
The Region stretches 385 km east-west and 250 km north-south, and borders on Pskov, Tver, Leningrad and Vologda Regions. The population of the city is about 250 thousands people, the population of the Region - 780 thousands people.
The climate of the Region is temperate continental, close to maritime.
Economic sectors of the Region
Basic indicators of social-economic development of the region in January-May 2007 in percentage to the same level of the previous year amount to: growth of industrial production- 102,5, volume of investments in fixed capital - 102,4, construction - 92,3, housing construction - 181,4. Mechanical engineering and metallurgy enterprises - Company Novgorodsky zavod GARO PJSC, Novgorod machine-building plant (Novgorodsky Mashinostroitelniy Zavod), CPJSC Novgorod Metallurgical Plant, CPJSC Istok, CPJSC Akron and others., food industry - CPJSC Adept, Novgorodsky Meat Dvor, LLC Uspolon, PJSC Alkon and others. Industry and energy -Borovichi Refractories Plant, research and development enterprise Start, Borovichi experimental machine-building plant, PJSC NOvgorodenergo, Municipal Unitary Enterprise Teploenergo, CPJSC Novgorodregiongas, SM TGC-2 in Novgorod Region and others.
The development of power supply system in the region
In 1930-40 enterprises of the Region built thermal, diesel and water power stations for their own use. In 1936 Valdai State District Power Station started operating. During the Great Patriotic War most of power supply lines were put out of action. Starting from 1945 Novoselelektrostroi became the prime electrification contractor.
The war recovery completed by the end of the 40-s. Power supply issues were addressed to Lenenergo and to the management of the 6th high-voltage district of Leningrad high-voltage network (LHVN). There were 429 electric power stations operating in the Region in 1950, and in 5 years - 7333 stations. In five years the electric-power production increased from 157 millions to 230 millions kilowatt-hour.
